In 1976, domestic violence was considered a private family matter that was simply not discussed. Community members were taught not to see bruises on a victim, not to hear the raised voices of their neighbors, and not to intervene when they felt something was wrong. But 50 years ago today (March 26, 2026), a small group of women refused to ignore the issue of domestic violence. They refused to allow any victim to suffer in silence. They took it upon themselves to welcome victims of domestic violence into their own homes to protect them from dangerous partners. One woman’s personal telephone number became a 24-hour helpline to support victims of abuse.
JBWS was formed in conversations around dinner tables, in informal counseling sessions on living room carpets, and in emergency shelter found in guest bedrooms. It was forged by women who understood abuse, because they lived it. They knew what support they needed in their own abusive relationships and dedicated their lives to making those services a reality.
These were pioneering women who rose to meet the moment at a time when others did not. Because of their commitment, JBWS has grown into a multi-faceted agency that has been providing life-saving services for 50 years.
