When JBWS was founded on March 26, 1976 there were little resources for victims of domestic violence. Abusing your partner was not even considered to be illegal. This forced victims to live under the threat of violence every single day.
JBWS’ early founders refused to leave any person in an abusive household. With no designated shelter, volunteers welcomed victims and their children into their own homes. In the early days of JBWS, these temporary shelters kept victims safe. The pioneering women who began JBWS learned how to support people by relying on their own lived experiences and deeply listening to the needs of victims.
