Journey to Safety: Maria’s Story

Originally from Colombia, Maria immigrated to the United States in “search of the American dream.” Unfortunately, not long after arriving in the country, Maria began experiencing physical, emotional, and verbal abuse in her relationship with her husband. Concerned for her safety, Maria came to Arbour House, JBWS’ Emergency Safe House Shelter.

“Being at JBWS kept me sane,” recalls Maria.

After her stay at Arbour House, Maria entered JBWS’ Carol G. Simon House Transitional Living Resource Center, known as Simon House. It was there that Maria was able to obtain vital skills that helped her become self-sufficient. She continued receiving counseling services, learned new parenting skills, attended English as a Second Language classes, and started the process of becoming an American citizen.

Little did Maria know when she first walked into Arbour House, that this would be the beginning of her work toward fulfilling her dream. If you are experiencing abuse, JBWS can help. Call 1.877.782.2873
